EPAFT Tuesday Teacher Tracker - 1.23.2024 (The Walmartizing of EPISD)

The purpose of this E-Mail is to share with you today’s EPISD Tuesday Teacher Tracker.

1.  The below are the number of empty positions being advertised by EPISD HR as of 7:00 AM January 23rd, 2024.

2.  Posted Teacher Openings:

            a.  Elementary (pK-5) – 111 Posted Openings, down 2 from 1.16.

            b.  Middle School (6-8) – 23 Posted Openings, down 2 from 1.16.

            c.  High School (9-12) – 22 Posted Openings, down 4 from 1.16.

            d.  Total – 162 Posted Openings, down 6 from 1.16.

            e.  Putting that in perspective, last year at this time, there were only 122 Posted Openings, and the number of teachers required was larger.

3.  Parents and Educators, you must ask yourself why the Superintendent is comfortable with at least 111 Elementary Classes, many Special Education and 270 Secondary classes not having a permanent, certified teacher assigned.

4.  Comment:  The rumblings from Fortress Stanton are that the Supe is quite displeased with the number of openings being made public as well as the impact on students and the backstory of profiting being shared.  Rumblings are that the Magic Math game may being played by HR to drive down the displeasing numbers.

5.  Assessment.

  1. The Superintendent appears to be deliberately using low cost, temporary employees as classroom teachers to make a profit at the expense of students.
  2. The Superintendent appears to be trying to convert as much as possible of the EPISD to “at-will” employee positions just like Walmart or contract out positions to corporations like the Stepping Stones Group.
  3. This, when combined with the computer driven, lock-step curriculum like Amplify, Eureka and Carnegie does not bode well for upcoming Assessment Season nor the future of EPISD students.

  1. I am getting indicators that the Superintendent is preparing to blame malcontent or poor teachers and other educators who resisted and undermined her efforts to save EPISD from itself.  (And I am sure that EPAFT and the Associations will be as well blamed and castigated as well.)
  2. I ask the EPISD Superintendent to refute with concrete explanations not slogans or ‘ghosting’ the serious concerns raised above.  Absent an answer from the Superintendent, we can only believe the worst is yet to come.

6.  Thursday, January 25th is the next EPISD Regular Board Meeting.  Yes, that is a change from the normal Tuesday scheduling.  Links to speak will be shared this afternoon, when posted by EPISD.

In Solidarity,

Ross Moore

President, EPAFT
